Colonial Williamsburg is a beautiful area that has attracted scores of painters over the years. Trying to see it "fresh" is pretty difficult. For some reason or other, I finally needed to produce some C.W. paintings. So I walked and walked around the area and of course took dozens of photos. All of these paintings are versions of one scene that I finally felt comfortable with. It's hard to know what to emphasize with C.W.-the grey colors against all that deep green, punctuated by bursts of color or the myriad of wonderful shapes that link to one another, so many roofs and windows and doorways, adorned by chimneys and dependencies and fences. I think that if I had focused on both shape and color, I would have ended up focusing on nothing.
